Emergency Protocol

What is an emergency?

An emergency during a special event or mass gathering can be defined as any incident occurring with respect to an event site, activity, staff, or the general public, which puts life safety at risk, and which requires extra measures on the part of event staff to respond, or which exceeds the event staff's capability to respond.

Examples of the types of emergencies that could occur during a special event may include things such as lost children, severe weather, mass casualty events, unruly crowds, etc.

Weather Emergencies

In the event of a weather emergency, organizers will make a determination on the best course of action.

  • Before the race - announcements will be made on the PA at the start line, and communicated on course via radio.
  • During the race - information will be communicated via radio, and to water station captains via phone.

Medical Emergency

Any serious medical emergency - call 911 first!

The event has a variety of medical services for runners:

  • Bike marshalls on course have basic first aid supplies and radios/phones to the communications centre
  • "MedVans" are part of the medical team, staffed by doctors and nurses, dispatched by the communications centre. They pick up runners who have had a medical problem on course and cannot finish
  • Toronto EMS is on course, and works with the communications centre. Serious medical emergencies from the med tent are transferred to hospital.
  • St John's is on Lakeshore, patrolling for medical issues near the the finish line
  • The med tent at Ontario Place, staffed by doctors and nurses

Communications centre - Phone number to be provided
